Male therapist in a Denver Colorado counseling office providing individual therapy.

Reaching out for help is one of the hardest steps. I’ve been there on my own mental health journey. Let me support you in your journey of self-discovery, change, and reconnection.

My philosophy for therapy at MindWell, LLC:

Mental health is a journey we are all on. We may encounter recurring thoughts, emotions, or patterns that feel familiar and challenging. But each time they arise, we meet them from a slightly different place within ourselves. A place shaped by growth, experience, and resilience. And in that shift, there’s an opportunity for healing and transformation.

Services

Schedule Appointment
  • Scheduling a whole therapy session without knowing the therapist can feel intimidating. I ease this feeling by offering a free 15-minute consultation, so we can get to know each other. We will talk about what you would like to focus on in therapy, and I will share my approach.

  • In a 55-minute therapy session, it is important to me to create a space that supports your mental health journey. I focus on meeting you where you are during each session. I believe anything that is shared during the session moves us towards your goals in therapy. I work with teens and adults, and I provide both in-person and telehealth mental health therapy options.

  • Have you been feeling disconnected and distanced from the one you love? Do you feel stuck in what to do next? Asking for help can be hard, especially when it is between you and your partner. Couples therapy can help reconnect and bring together you and your loved one.

Clients reach out to me for support with:

  • Grief is a universal experience. I believe that grief and loss are more nuanced and complex, which makes sitting with our grief even more challenging and needed. I focus on creating a space to express all spectrums of grief.

  • Anything can be traumatic, and not everything will traumatize someone. I use this as a reminder and validation that everyone experiences trauma. I aim to support you by focusing on the aspects of yourself that feel overwhelming and being by your side to find ways to heal and process these experiences.

  • Trauma with relationships can cause significant disruption in our lives. We can become increasingly nervous about seeing people, often wondering how someone will act, or feel like we are walking on eggshells. In therapy, we can find ways to meet you where you are at by finding ways to support your healing from relationship trauma.

  • In society, men are less likely to seek out therapeutic services. There are several reasons, including stigma and shame. I relate to these feelings as I have worked through societal and cultural views of men’s mental health. I work towards creating a space to process, challenge, and redefine what men’s mental health means for my clients.

  • Anger is often misunderstood and can be rooted in how we are trained to express this emotion. Anger is often portrayed as negative, but I believe our anger can teach us about ourselves, our thought processes, and what we truly need.

If you don’t see what you are experiencing in these areas, let me know. I’d be happy to meet for a free 15-minute consultation to see if I am a good fit for you. If not, I am happy to share a few other therapists who might be a good fit for you.

About me, Matthew Schilz, MSW, MPH, SWC:

Do you feel lost, stuck, or overwhelmed? Maybe you’re struggling after the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, the end of a relationship, or a traumatic experience that has shaken you to your core. Grief, loss, and trauma can leave you feeling numb, directionless, or convinced you’re doing everything wrong. My goal is to help you heal, build new skills, and develop perspectives that empower you to show up as the person you want to be.

In our work together, therapy will be shaped around what you need. Some days, we may explore difficult feelings, memories, and patterns. Other days, we may not dive as deeply—and that’s okay. I value creativity and flexibility in therapy; if a song resonates with you or a movie reflects your experience, we can use that as a starting point. Healing can come from many places, and having space to process and reflect can help you redefine your life.

I’ve supported survivors of domestic violence, refugees and asylum seekers, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people navigating trauma, anxiety, and hopelessness. These experiences strengthen my commitment to meeting you with compassion and curiosity. My somatic approach incorporates techniques from somatic therapy, CBT, DBT, parts work, narrative therapy, and mindfulness. I am continually learning new ways to support your healing, including offering EMDR in early Spring 2026.
